Super Glue Gel: A Product of Many Uses and Many Names

Chemically known as cyanoacrylate glue, Super Glue Gel is an adhesive bonding product that has revolutionized the world of material modeling. In the past, permanent or long term gluing together of different materials like plastic and metal was not possible. The introduction of super or krazy glue to the workbench has changed this forever. Not only does it make the joining together of metal and plastic feasible, but it also allows for usage of new materials like resin in modeling.

Though it is primarily used on plastic surfaces, super glue can be used on many different types of work surfaces. Once used it does not experience any kind of shrinkage and tolerates a great amount of scribing which makes it the perfect product that can be used as a filler. The seams of this powerful adhesive are highly resistant to any kind of destructive force and it can be sanded down to blend seamlessly into any surface.

What it is & How it Works

Scientifically speaking, super glue gel is called ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate or ECA. In mundane everyday usage, Super Glue Gel is known by a variety of names like krazy glue, permabond, super bonder, pro grip, and of course, superglue. Unlike regular thread locking glues, super glue has a bonding reaction that is kicked in by the humidity in the air. Once activated by the medium of humidity, super glue sets quickly within ten to thirty seconds.

Super bonding glue works immediately and perfectly when applied between two surfaces that are pressed together in a way that does not allow for more than 0.25 mm of space between them. This hardening or curing of pro grip may take some time if a thicker application of this product is required. The primary reason for this is that the curing reaction or hardening or polymerization starts on the outside of the blob and works its way to the center. If the blob of glue is thick, the reaction might stop before it reaches the center and cause incomplete solidification. Thicker seams take a longer time to harden.

The benefit of this is that when the seams are thicker and a larger blob of krazy glue is put to use, adjustments can be made easily. Once the right placement is reached, all you would have to do is press the parts together and reduce the size of the seam. This will cause instant bonding and hardening.

Uses of Super Glue

This strong gel adhesive can be used to fill gaps and stick together a large variety of surfaces. This quick setting gel works best on materials such as:

  • Leather
  • Plastic
  • Metals
  • Ceramics
  • Porcelain
  • Pottery
  • Jewelry
  • Rubber
  • Vinyl
  • Wood
  • Aluminum and more

On the other hand, there are a few substances that permabond does not work satisfactorily with. It is best to not use it with substances under the categories of:

  • Teflon
  • Certain types of silicon rubber
  • Glass
  • Mirrors
  • Polyethylene or polypropylene

Though super glue can stand large amounts of scribing pressure, it is not recommended for use on surfaces that will be subjected to a great deal of shock or that will be exposed to water immersion for long periods of time.

Words of Caution

Super glue gel is the answer to most of your bonding and adhesive questions when it comes to modeling. However, it needs to be kept in mind that this is a commercial product and certain safety rules need to be maintained. Super glue is non-toxic but you may end up bonding body parts such as fingers or eyelids together.
